Welcome Nancy

by Sid on July 31st, 2008

If you glance to the right one inch and down a few more, you'll notice a new face… yep, that's Nancy, our newest contributor. Her pilot blog was so amusing that we've invited her back for… the next year! (her senior year in high school, I might add)

So I asked Nancy to indulge us by sharing a little about what makes her tick. Please step inside…

natalie dee

I was surfing the web the other day and I realized it had been months since I checked one of my favorite web comics — nataliedee.com. So, I went on, and got through dozens of comics before it came to me the thought that many of these drawings actually sort of defined my life up until now. Natalie Dee’s comics inevitably make my day better therefore I gathered a hand full that not only make up a mini-timeline of my life but will, perhaps, make your day go a bit smoother. Enjoy.

Blogging. Everyone is doing it. So, why wouldn’t colleges do it too?
Well, they have. Since 2004.

Not all colleges have them but I would say about roughly 50% (I’m sure the numbers are growing as I type) have invested in this technological revolution. My advice here is: if you’re interested in a college then, go ahead, rummage through their website and hopefully you’ll be lucky enough to find some student blogs that will, undeniably, give you deeper insight into everything that college has to offer.

Setting out on my own college blog hunt, I was able to find plenty of student blogs (although they took me forever to find). Unfortunately, some blogs have been left un-updated for months and some even years. I know college students are busy, busy, busy but when zero out of six bloggers have posted a sentence in more then five months., why would the college even bother to have the blogs advertising on their website? Well, luckily there are college student blogs out there that are regularly kept up-to-date with at least a post every week or so. So, I’ve compiled a list, for your reading pleasure, of my five favorite college student blogs on the web; they offer a combination of interesting experiences, tons of college-survival tips, and a lot of love towards their college. I didn’t read or see every student college blog out there so, please, don’t bite my head off if you don’t see your favorite college blog on the list.

Zinch has helped thousands of students connect with other students, find the college of their dreams, and, of course, it has supported students in becoming "more than a test score" since it launched in March 2007. A prime example of Zinch's success is Pauline Diaz (zinch.com/pauline.college). She just graduated from a Jesuit Catholic high school in Denver, CO and this Fall she'll be attending Seattle University. Because of Zinch, she was not only able to learn more about herself, who she is, and what she's passionate about but also gained an infinite amount of information from numerous colleges. Pauline was also able to begin a student-run blog (soulsucking.blogspot.com; The "C" Word), that includes students who were recruited through the Zinch forums, which speaks about the grueling college admissions process and brings up plenty if interesting topics that affect all prospective college students. Now, I don't want to be cheesy, but Pauline Diaz is most definitely "more than a test score"! I virtually sat down with her long-distance a few days ago and asked about everything from Zinch to college applications to chicken fingers. Here's what she told me:

It's been two days since my last post — I know I promised to write every day but I've been finding it tough trying to find what I would write about next and how I would write it. You can say that lately I've been having intense writer's block. Not only have I been having difficulty writing for this blog or for my other blog but I've also been having a sticky time trying to think of what I should write for my Common Application essay. I'm sure most of you who are part of the class of '09 know that the Common Application officially came out on July 1st.

To be honest, I'm afraid of myself when I procrastinate so I started on my college applications as soon as I could. When I first read through the Common App, this was my reaction:

As most of you might already know, Zinch is a strong supporter of letting students be "more than a test score."

Yesterday, with the Zinch motto in hand, Sid gracefully offered me his Zinch Report blog and, from what I remember (I blacked out from the shock/excitement), he said, "Go ahead, hijack my blog for one week and write whatever you'd like. We want to get a student's perspective." Well, needless to say, I'm still a bit stunned he, nonetheless Zinch, would actually let me do this.

But, hold on a sec, who are you? WHO DARES TO WRITE ON SID'S GLORIOUS BLOG?!
