Thanksgiving Break

So how about this for some conflicting advice:

At this time of year, stress can run very high. I’ve talked to seniors who have been working tirelessly on their essays and are about cross eyed with their edits. I’ve also talked to students who have not started writing and are panicking about looming deadlines.

School Deadlines to Submit Materials

Many high school guidance/college offices require students to give their essays and college lists, for example, to them (the counselors) prior to submitting the material to the colleges. Take these deadlines seriously!

Your college counselors set these deadlines so that they can compile all the material and submit the school portions in advance of the deadlines. Easy as it is to forget, the school counselor has to write a recommendation, submit a transcript and school profile for each student and make sure that that package get to all the right colleges.

Supplemental Essays

Rest assured, if you are using the Common Application for any or all of your schools, you are likely to have supplemental essays to write. What this means is that you will have to write the Personal Statement that is the primary essay of your application (as seen on the Common App), and then, in addition, you will have to write any essays that the specific college desires.

Bottom line – save time and energy to work on these other essays and don't try to say everything in the Personal Statement. Use the supplemental essays as a means to express other aspects of yourself and your different experiences that make you unique!

Defining Some Terms

For those of you who applied early, you'll be hearing next month. The options include….

Admit = you got in!!

Deny = you did not get in and you may not reapply to that same school regular decision.

Defer = neither admit nor deny. If you are deferred it means that your application will be reviewed in the regular decision pool and you will hear a final answer in the spring.
