Tips for Your Senior Year

Senior year in high school is a daunting time – between visiting colleges, taking exams and writing essays, you’re also trying to keep up with your homework and extra curricular activities, not to mention wanting to spend every free moment with your friends before having to say an official goodbye in nine months. As you enter your senior year, it’s important to keep a few things in perspective. Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest scholarship administrator, shares the following tips:

Don’t slack off. You still have another year to get through before graduation, so keep on top of your homework and grades. Most colleges request an updated transcript after your first semester or after you graduate. Even if you’ve paid an enrollment deposit, colleges can still choose to take back your admission acceptance if your grades have slipped significantly.

Start the application process early. The sooner you finish those applications, the sooner you can get back to your regular routine. Most applications will require letters of recommendations. Give teachers at least a month to write the letter before applications are due. Don’t wait until the last minute to request your high school transcript either. It’s a busy time of year for counselors, so make sure you give them plenty of time to submit your transcripts so you don’t miss any deadlines.

Pay attention to the details. All college applications are different. Some have early-enrollment options; some require both SAT and ACT scores; and all will have different deadlines. It’s easy to miss something on an application, so have a parent or friend look over your applications before you submit them. Most importantly, fill out everything thoroughly, and don’t forget to include the fees.

Apply for as many scholarships as possible. Even if you aren’t at the top of your class, there are still scholarships out there for you. Zinch.com lets you create a profile and then matches you to scholarships that matter. Zinch also matches, dollar for dollar, every scholarship that you find, mark as applied, and win through Zinch.

Clean up your Facebook and MySpace pages. There’s a chance that a college admission person might come across you on a social networking site, or even seek your page out before accepting you to the college. Even if you think your Facebook or MySpace page is blocked to the outside world, if it’s on the Internet, ultimately someone can find it. Delete any incriminating photos or comments, and make sure your page represents you in a positive light.

Savor the moment. Carry a camera to snap photos of your final moments with friends – the last football game, the last homecoming dance, the last band concert. Buy a yearbook and have your friends sign it. Get involved in clubs or sports you haven’t tried yet. And most importantly, start to move on. The rest of your life is awaiting you.

The Cheese: Last Minute Aid

WSJ.com had a good article yesterday about last minute financial aid and I thought I would just share some tidbits and thoughts:

“Weeks or even days before classes start, hundreds of thousands of college students nationwide still don’t know whether they’ll be able to cover their tuition bills this year.”

How are our Zinch students doing?  Have you guys been able to get your tuition bills covered? Has your state cut funding? Your school? Have to had resort to a less pricey school or switch to part-time status?

What role do you think the gov’t should play in funding individual student’s higher education? Your college or university?  Your parents? Yourself?

I assume a lot of people are feeling the pinch this year.  The WSJ article said that ROTC applications have doubled this year (they offer a lot of scholarships and financial aid), definitely an indicator of people turning to different sources for aid.

The article included this chart on last minute financial aid options that I thought was worth sharing:

Last Minute Financial Aid

For those of you that are looking for last minute aid options, a NYTimes article yesterday revealed a new and interesting option: SafeStart.  Their concept is akin to loan insurance.  You pay them a fee each semester–around $40-$70.  Paying that fee guarantees you an interest free loan from SafeStart should you ever fall behind on your gov’t student loans.  This is a safety net to help you from ruining your credit.

There are some other options out there–the WSJ article mentions greennote.com–but the NYTimes article mentions that it has been slow to gain traction.  Greennote.com is a site that allows you to pool micro loans from people you know and your network, also called peer-to-peer lending.

I know just from the comments on the Zinch scholarship profiles that a lot of you have a lot of challenges in paying for school.  I think the important thing is to stay determined, know your resources, and get creative where you need to.

Console Gaming: Who’s Winning Who’s Loosing

Nielsen just released it statistics on game usage and found that June was up 21 percent in the time spent playing video games when in contrast consumer spending on games dropped 31 percent. The average console was used 768 minutes in the month of June.

So if people aren’t buying and are just playing, what are they playing on? Well Nielsen said that Xbox 360 and Playstation 2 were tied up for status of most used with the Wii only slightly trailing. The Wii clearly came out the winner for attracting the most females and males being more attracted to Xbox 360. Nielsen also found that more than half of total usage was claimed to be by those aged 18 and under.
