Weekly Scholarship Winner: Peyton McKinney

Congratulations to Peyton McKinney , our latest Weekly “Three Sentence Essay” Scholarship winner!

In the animal kingdom chameleons are famous for their ability to change their colors to adapt to their surroundings. With that in mind, we wanted to know how you are a “social chameleon” in your own life. Peyton’s answer stood out to us for his ability to recognize his strengths and weaknesses, while still finding a way to adapt to his classroom environment.

Here’s his winning essay:
I am a “social chameleon” because as a student I’m able to learn new areas of study that I otherwise would not be used to. I am a very straight-forward thinker, but I had to take a Philosophy course my first year at Hofstra. I was able to think outside of the box to get a B-.

Here’s a bit more about our winner:
I am an outgoing, but straight forward person. I like sports, mainly football and doing anything interesting or new. I go to school at Hofstra University and major in Finance. I am looking to double major with Management as well.

Here’s a few of our favorite runner’s up:

Kendrick W. – I moved around when I was a kid and was forced to adapt to not only new people but new surroundings. There is potential to make friends wherever we go, no matter what we are humans who don’t want to be alone and truly want a lot of friends. I hope to grow and learn from people.

Wyatt F. – You might find me decked out in the most ridiculous green and gold spirit gear (caution tape and cape are optional) cheering on my peers at a game, or dressed up in dashing formal attire at a Key Club event. Though I adapt like a social chameleon, I don’t hide behind camouflage.

Vivian N. – I have a tendency to associate certain settings with certain times. Around my family, I am simple and sweet; in other words, a reflection of the daughter my parents have and will always know. At school, however, I turn to face and build my future by getting alert and ambitious.

Did this last prompt fly just under your radar? Don’t worry, cause with our Weekly “Three Sentence Essay” Scholarship there’s a new opportunity to win $1,000 every Monday! Just click the link, fill out the form, and hit apply––it’s that easy!

Weekly Winner: Virginia Rush

Congratulations to Virginia Rush , our latest Weekly “Three Sentence Essay” Scholarship winner!

Teachers can have a huge impact on a student’s life. Whether it’s in the classroom, on the field, or after hours, a teacher’s influence can be far reaching. That’s why we wanted to know about an instance in which you’ve seen a teacher go above and beyond for a student. Virginia’s answer was chosen for acknowledging her teacher’s dedication to her students’ well being, regardless of influence from fellow faculty or members of the student body.

Here’s her winning essay:
At my high school, alcoholism among students was common. Teachers heard about the parties and just ignored the problem. One dedicated teacher would drive by these parties, not to scold but to protect the kids she cared about and give students a safe ride home—she saved my life.

Here’s a little bit more about our winner:
I love art. If there was anything in the world I could do for the rest of my life, it would be making a difference through my art.

Here’s a few of our favorite runner’s up:

Milcah U. – This past semester, in the middle of taking my Mechanics of Solids final exam, the professor carried in boxes of cookies & distributed them to the entire room as “brain-fuel”. I thought, “Finally, a professor who simply remembers what it was like to be a hard-working student”.

Tsuzuki K. – My 2nd grade teacher bought picture books and a set of Valentine’s Day cards for me to pass out to my classmates. At that time, I did not understand any English at all, nor was I familiar with the U.S. culture. Her generosity motivated me to try my best in this foreign country.

Allison P. – A professor challenged me to apply my learning outside of the classroom through research, leading to me working for a research institution, where I discovered I wanted to become a nurse. Had he simply stopped caring once class was over, I wouldn’t have discovered my life calling.

Virginia scored an extra grand from Zinch, but so can you! Check out our scholarship search to find all the latest additions to our database–with over $2 billion in financial aid listed you can’t go wrong!

Top 10 Secrets of Leveraging the Course Syllabus

Students often view the course syllabus as something they glance at on the first day of classes, and then toss in their backpacks, never to be seen again. In reality, the syllabus is a treasure trove of information: one of the few places in the course where the professor reveals his or her true conception of the course and explains what you need to do to excel in the course.

The trouble is, very few students know how to read the syllabus and unearth the important clues that are often found there. You’re guaranteed to do a bang-up job in each of your courses if you pay attention to these 10 secrets of the college syllabus.
