Weekly Scholarship Winner: Jasmine Wu
Congratulations to Jasmine Wu, our latest Weekly “Three Sentence Essay” Scholarship winner!
As we close the book on 2011 we have to look back in awe. It was a big year for a lot of reasons, and we wanted to know what you considered the landmark moments. Jasmine’s essay was chosen for its honest insight and asking us to remember the one gift we should all hold dear.
Here’s her winning essay:
In April, my friend died in a hit-and-run. In October, Steven Jobs lost his battle with cancer; in late October, the 7 billionth person born was recorded. 2011 has reminded [me] how precious life is and has inspired me to do everything I can in the time I have.
Here’s a bit more about our winner:
I fall asleep in front of the computer watching videos of band field shows or parade competitions. On other days I’m on swimnetwork.com, probably gushing over Eric Shanteau (my #1 idol!). Or perhaps on days when I’m feeling strangely combustive in thoughts, I’ll be wandering around Facebook and Tumblr, yakking with my friends about the strangest things and trying not to weird them out too much.
Here’s a few of our favorite runner’s up:
Bryce H. - June of this year I went on an extended trip to Montana and made innumerable memories with my best friend. I got my first job and began earning my own money this November; I find it extremely rewarding. I turned 18, and realized how rich and long life has been and will be.
Megan M. - The assassination of Bin Laden because it brought peace of mind to 9/11 families. Sami Stoner competing in events with a guide dog because it shows perseverance. And Greek riots leading to a change in government because it shows potential uncertainty for the future.
Subi Q. – Three notable events of 2011 include the Arab Spring, the end to the Iraq War, and the world’s first artificial organ transplant. The events in the Middle East point towards prospects of democracy, while the breakthrough in transplant technology indicates future stem cell use.
What could be your most memorable moment of 2012? How about winning a scholarship?! Apply for our Weekly “Three Sentence Essay” Scholarship and you could make it happen. Three sentences for a thousand bucks? Score!
